One of my favourite "album" releases to emerge from Grime in the last 5 years got the ever increasingly trendy "Twitter Release" from Terror Danjah this week following on from Wiley, Dot Rotten and Spooky's extravagant giveaways (perhaps extravagance is an understatement in the case of Wiley).

The album first hit shelves in 2007 and is dominated by the immortal sounds of Terror Danjah and his small producing family (DOK, Big ED & Planet X) with contributions from the old Aftershock collective, most of whom still work together but under no moniker.

There is a toss-up of ideas and sounds, especially from the female contributors. Whereas before we had Lady Fury, Stush and Shystie who would actually spit on typical, hardcore Grime beats, on this CD we can hear what Grime sounds like for 3 minutes with the accompaniment of former Garage/R & B vocalists such as Shola Ama and her sister Sadie, Gemma Fox also gliding across the soft yet Grimey productions.

To oppose that idea of course, there had to be some hype and that is duly provided by (constantly underrated) Birmingham MC Devlilman alongside the talents of Bruza, Loudmouth, Tinie Tempah (who has a number one and two this year), and even Wiley in one of my favourite tracks from the release (Catch Up). Other highlights include Loudmouth going in on 2000 and Shock, 2 Nice on Feeling's Grow and my first instroduction to Badness on Ten Out Of Ten.

There is also an insane mash-up of the timeless Zumpi Hunter featuring Triple Threat, Royal, Krucial, Mz Bratt and more. Talking of insanse, take a listen to the set below featuring Terror on the legendary Rinse FM decks with Triple Threat, D Double E & Flyte !!

(Video/Single Review)Devlin's Brainwashing The UK...

A fantastic video with a brilliant concept from Devlin. The video shows the Dagenham MC performing his new single alone in a room with just a video camera, whilst elsewhere in London we can see some meticulous planning taking place with maps being stapled to walls and large projector screens being draped across landmarks with various electrical wires and arials and other technical crap being thrown about by geezers in dark clothing gear and masks. Once their white transit van has finished it's course through London, the mask-donning figures switch on a massive projector which is followed by aghast stricken members of the public staring at huge beams of Devlin in the aforementioned room, blaring out his debut single: Brainwashed.

It's a far cry from the type of production we're used to from Devlin, it stretches way beyond the cold Lewi White snares and the evil rhythms of Shotz and instead relies on a mellow but defiant rhythm from Swedish talent Eshraque "Ishi" Mugha. That said however, the intricate and bewildering wordplay plus the perplex rhyme schemes evocative of Tales From The Crypt very much exist and wonderfully so, as the chorus does all but bug me (you can buy a Devlin only chorus version from iTunes though).

The tune as a whole had me in two minds at first; after it's numerous daytime radio plays, irony plays it's part in the affair - I'm literally Brainwashed now, often catching the last lyric of every line and humming along sub-consciously, so come the 8th August make sure you hit iTunes (via this link) and purchase the single, it's worth it !!

M.I.K's Working A Grime To Five...The Interview

Grime and the East end of London go hand-in-hand. But there's been some blips in this Bow-Leytonstone tower block matrix in the distant past, when crews such as Essentials and South Agents reared their keen-to-prove heads with classic mix CDs such as Zero's Ground Zero and Bearman's Bear Necessities accompanying a plethora of pirate radio sets and studio takeovers such as the Hazzardous Sessions. Can M.I.K recapture the South London glory...

SO the new CD is out right now, "Grime 2 Five", the previous one was called "Workaholic". Can you outline a difference in anything between the two ?

Grime To Five is a more planned out project and when I say this I mean in terms of the production, artwork, promotion, vocal features, the sound quality, track concepts, everything. Whereas Workaholic was really complete in a matter of weeks - I was just in a rush to bring out my first actual psychical CD due to the demand for it - if you listen to the the both of them now you'll notice the work and effort that got put into Grime To Five compared to Workaholic.

Production wise the Cd's got stuff from some of the scene's darker horses, in that I mean excellent quality but not quite known by everyone yet, Rockz, Exo Remedy being two good examples. Is this something you done for a particular reason or ?

Well at the time when I was picking beats for Grime To Five, I said to myself that I'm only going to work with one producer, Relentless. But then I remembered all the other guys that I've worked with in the past such as Exo, Swizzee, Spooky, J Beatz etc and thought they've all got the sound that I'm looking to use for this CD so yeah it wasn't really a thing of "I only want work with the much bigger guys" but more the fact of the sound I was looking for.

What exactly is "the sound" you wanted to capture with the CD ? Do you feel you found what you was looking for ?

At first I didn't, I had done like 7 tracks for the CD but they wasn't grimey enough so I scraped them and started working on it again - went back to square one collecting nothing but full on grimey beats - rewriting bars choruses etc and in the end I was like yeah this is how I want the CD to sound "all out grimey" no softness what so ever.

Sometimes when people fling out a mix tape they've got quite an abundance features from people that are strictly from their area or crew, I think on this CD there's something like nine features and Merky (Ace) and Ego are the only ones from your camp, how did you organise the other features ?

It's just a matter of making a simple phone call, getting them down to the studio and making music really, nothing to hard.

Maybe not everyone will know but you've actually been doing the MCing for quite a while now, the listeners in South will have heard of you through the pirates but now it seems people from all over the place are taking genuine interest, how does that feel ?

Yeah it's alright I suppose because to be real, I'm not doing this for the face or the rep I just really enjoy doing Grime music and if people like what I'm doing then I take it as a bonus because when I came in the game I never did it for the recognition but for the love of it like I said.

On the intro track to the new CD you say numerous things which we'll go over, firstly you mention that your previous CD (Workaholic) "done a lot for you", how ?

Basically Workaholic changed a lot of views that people had on me, I went from the MC that only did pirate radio who was releasing loads of free download able music to the MC who can actually put together a psychical CD and be able to sell it and not only do pirate radio but legal as well.

Perhaps one of the most obvious things to turn into a question but you go onto to list a few things we won't be hearing on the CD that are descriptive of some other Grime tunes we've heard lately, to summarise for those who haven't heard it, what will we be hearing across the 16 tracks ?

I cant put it in no other words apart from 100% dutty mucky hardcore GRIME!

Recently you dropped (yet another) free download, but in a twist to previous material we've used to hearing from you, it was full off instrumentals. How long have you been producing and is that set to become one of your main focuses now ?

I've producing for a strong minute but I'm not as serious about it as I am with writing lyrics. I'd rather leave it to the better lot. As for doing it in the future it's something I think about all the time but not for now.

Last year when Logan Sama still had his two hour slot you popped inside the Kiss 100 studios alongside Merky ACE and provided a more than decent set, before that of course you had been on 1xtra with Westwood and most obviously before that, the pirates. Is there a way of putting that journey into words for us ?

Yeah man the appearance on Logan's show was very over due so I've a lot of respect for him for me giving a chance to show my talent to a wider audience. As for the pirate radio grind it's just a really hard graft; I mean I was up and down all over the place near enough every day non-stop, I was tired all the time but it's really good practice for the vocal cords and stage preforming side of things.

Some DJs, MCs and other figures from the scene have put it blunt and basically said that pirate radio aspect of Grime is dead. Where do you stand on that ? Because like you said everyone knew you from radio but wanted you to do some Cd's; so now we're two retail Cd's down the line have you a preference when it comes to making a CD or going in on a pirate set ?

How I see it is that the MCs/DJs that are really 'out there' will say that because they've got full backing management, street teams, online groupies etc but someone that has just stepped in the game wont see the pirates as a dead outlet 'cause it's a very strong way to build a fan base and promote your stuff. When making a CD just do you don't change what you do for no one and people will respect you for that full stop, as for the pirates stick at it radio will never die as long as there are listeners.

It would be good to hear you on radio again, maybe this time with the whole Family Tree on a chosen ones set. Which brings me onto my next topic: The crew. Can we expect a group effort from you guys soon ?

A Family Tree project is in the pipeline but everyone has there own solo projects to finish before it can be finalised.

Some crews refer to themselves as either collectives or full-on crews, what category does Family Tree fall into ?

I'd have to say more of a Family type movement because some of us are actually related and the ones who ain't have known the rest from the early days.

Recently you and fellow MC Rival went bar-for-bar at Risky's Mic Fight, how do you feel the clash went for you ? A couple of war dubs have been traded since and reading into the content and lyrics it seems a little 'personal', how do you see things ?

Like to be real I went to the war unarmed simply because I didn't feel the need to strap bars or do the research, blah blah blah, so on those terms I felt stood my ground. After the clash a few people agreed that I had won even though I didn't come prepared but it was a good little spar. However when the dubs started I was in my zone 'cause that's what I love doing best. But nah on my behalf it was never nothing personal just me spitting acid at him really (laughs).

2 CDs, 15 (at a rough count) free downloads, a few wars, what's your next target ? Do you set yourself targets as an MC ? How do you get round to writing your lyrics ?

I'm looking to drop an official video sometime soon and yeah I always like setting myself targets 'cause it keeps me driven and active. When writing lyrics I get my ideas really from the beat depending on what type of vibe it gives of - if it's a hype beat I pen a hype bar - if it's a mellow beat I don't bother with it.

Well actually now I remember something you said on the intro track went along the lines of "none of that dance music on here", do you not feel that aspect of the scene then because a lot of producers enjoy making that type of rave friendly Grime...is it something that maybe we could hear you take on at another point ?

Nope, not for me anyway - I dislike this soft grime. You wont ever hear me doing a kinky grime song, a soggy dance song, none of that bull jive I'm far too stuck in my ways which are 100% grime.

One of the biggest talking points as the moment is Dubstep. People are bickering as to which producers are copying each other, the amount of Dubstep that gets played in Grime sessions and all sorts of other hype like that. Do you like Dubstep, can you see yourself releasing anything that's more sort of "Dubstep based" or "Dubstep influenced".

I don't go out of my way to listen to Dubstep but when I hear it I enjoy some of it. I got sent a couple tunes from Fused Forces and Mr Snowman that I'm looking to vocal soon so yeah I'm looking to release something on a dubby vibe.

As we've covered you've been doing this for a number of years now, when exactly did you start and to what degree has the scene developed since ?

I started years back - say 2001 - but only taking it seriously since 2008. The scene has developed in to some bandwagon high horse to be real, everyone that I see doing it now seems to be doing it for the face, there's no rules any more 'cause like back in the day if you was good people would rate and respect you but now you could be really good but not know anyone in the scene and you'd get air - it's just messed up but that's the way it goes in music not just grime.

There are a lot of artists that used to be rated really high in the South London scene that are no longer active in the Grime bracket, for example people like Bearman, K Dot Kidman, Seb Zero. Did anyone from South influence you on the come-up and where do you see South in terms of where we're at in the scene ?

Yeah Essentials & NAA. They were the two crews I used to listen to a lot. In terms of South in the scene, I'd say it goes East then South simply because East are the founders of the grime sound and but right now South are the more active.

It's hardly a secret: your work rate is quite astonishing. A lot of your music reflects that, even in release titles (Grime To Five, Workaholic, Tea Break etc) we can see you put the effort in, do you not feel that sometimes you're running the risk of putting in TOO MUCH work ? In the sense that people may get bored ?

You know what, my boy was saying the same thing to me the other day. He was telling me I need to slow down with how much music I put out 'cause people will get bored of hearing me etc, but the thing is it's only just now that people are really starting to take interest in my work so I cant really take a break now when the new supporters are going to want more. I did say after Grime To Five I was going to take some time out to reinvent myself but I don't know now.

CD IS DEAD. GO GET A DAY JOB INSTEAD. Bored of this now, although I'm intrigued with JME's album however which is up for pre-order on UK Recordshop now despite a baffling lack of critical information (i.e: NO artwork, NO track listing and NO release date). He spoke briefly to Logan about the album when he passed through this week's pre-recorded show, if you wondered, expect production from the likes of Grime Reaper, Mr V, DJ Q, S-X, and of course, JME.

The language quickly turned street fighter but luckily enough, Logan had a dirty Deeco riddim for the Boy Better Know "CEO" to destroy.

Diesle also passed through to talk about his new free download Another Contender, it's good and definitly worth a download. He spoke about the old raves, De Ja Vu plus more, I'll be catching up with him for the MTV Wrap Up site very soon. He's got a single called I Got The Power (yes, sampling that tune) produced by Skepta due in September and to close his segment he had a go over a few beats, the wheels were pretty deserved to be honest, Logan's mixing was on point which is probably why he's out representing in the USA right now..

What you can't see is Tempz in a Mondeo out of shot.

Roll Deep, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder, Dizzee Rascal. All number one selling artists, but via the art of what many call "watered down shit".

To see the latter trio of names touch a pirate radio station again holds as much likeliness as me picking up a Daily Mail with the headline "Ok You Rumbled Us: We ARE Glorified Tabloid Paper With Racist Far Right Nonses For Journo's - Oh AND Every things Great" with a picture of Gordon Brown popping some gun fingers below it. But we all know that isn't going to happen - so somewhere along the line - Grime needs to shake hands with the mainstream lot whilst maintaining a level of respect amongst it's current fan base. If any one's come close to doing that recently then it's got to be the man they call TEMPA T.

The above tune is entitled Hypest Hype and is produced by the duo who Tempz recently accompanied on tour - Chase and Status. The crowd looked terribly puzzled during some parts of the performance - I've watched so much Football over the past 24 hours I half expected Howard Webb to come on stage and brandish a yellow card at Tempz as he took of his top - but that never happened (thankfully) and Tempz went on to perform Boy Of Da Ting and Next Hype. The video's of which you can watch at http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/bigweekend/2010/artists/tempat/, I like the fact that despite the seemingly baffled and perplexed looks on people's faces, there are people genuinely enjoying the music - just a little bit into Boy Off Da Ting you can see one kid's eyes light up in an "yeah we'll have some of this, but what is it, raa this is alright you know" sort of way, as you do.

You see them video's, they're Grime, with an audience who went to see the likes of Florence & The Machine, Plan B, Rihanna et al. I'm not insinuating Grime has blown but that, is indeed, a step forward.

Tune Of The Week: Guido - Mad Sax

Ruff Sqwad's Love You Feel meets G Dub's Jezebel in this fabulous saxophone attack from Bristol's very own Guido. I was none the wiser as to who the young producer/Dj was just a few months ago until someone reccomended I download his '29 Minute Mix', and since then I've enjoyed hearing quite a few of his beats; the one featured in this blog title being an instant favourite.

Mad Sax is featured in the aforementioned mix which is where my initial hearing of the masterpiece took place, admittedly I had forgotten all about it until DJ Spyro dropped this mix on his new MixCloud.

Taken from his forthcoming album debut 'Anidea', Guido hints at matchmaking the sounds of Electronics and live instrumentation together culminating in a colourful arrangement of sounds. Check the tune being dropped LIVE at Trinity Hall below.

Just like Joker and Gemmy (both also Bristol based) before him, Guido is a Dubstep producer who utilises Grime sounds and often speeds to great affect.

Check what he had to say on his favourite tracks and more in this interview with Elijah, for now look forward to his album due out on Punch Drink Records.

Beatgeeks Present The Art Of Production (Review)

It's been a long time since I've sat down and done a proper full length review, so to get away from all that election BOLLOCKS I had a listen to the new mixtape from Nottingham based outfit Beatgeeks.

An interesting blend of instrumentals and vocalled tracks, the first of which Make It Pay opens up the CD with a hard hitting percussion attack topped with a sample of Desperado's "licking out stars in war" bar. S.R.E's Ill Murk features on the next track Feel Meh where the flow is pretty sharp and intense, unlike the next track World Go Round where things zone out for a little bit with some catchy pulses and mellow tones.

It's not just the Nottingham producing-duo who're showcase the plethora of outer capital talent, Birmingham's Vader tears Nottz 2 Brum to shreds but the so far Grimey glory comes to an abrupt end with Who Said. To be fair to all parties concerned (Beatgeeks, Wariko) it's one of the better efforts as far as Funky goes, not for me nor the hardcore Grime fan however. Lady Hunter continues the Funky vibe with Deejay as does Kim Gardner on After Dark, but the Funkiness is transfused back into a Grimier speed almost amalgamating the two on Wariko & Ventrola's very catchy Ready.

Stop Calling Me offers a modern take on what seems to be borderline Bassline with Jah Digga absolutely going in alongside Chloe's vocals creating what is almost a flashback to some early noughties rave garage. Game is another instrumental which focuses on a slower rhythm with some stinkin' bass on top, think Starkey's 'Capusle' with a heavier percussion. Desperado raps something greeze over a live sounding rap production, but is overshadowed by make favourite track on the CD: Ruff Sqwad & Lauren's 'Wanna Make It Right'. Slix wraps up the opening verse smoothly and Wariko adds a touch of nasty alongside Rapid which combined with Lauren's amazing chorus makes for wonderful listening.

Do you remember Fangol ? He was the Nottingham MC that absolutely raped that huge Logan Sama set late last year; despite his apparent lack of presence since then he goes in on Make That Money alongside Jah Digga who himself rips up Enemy Of Frenemy.

THE VERDICT: If you're into versatile producers than this CD is definitely one for your collection but those with a clear admiration for one sound will find it difficult to appreciate some of the mixed genre experimentation. Fair play to Beatgeeks though whom made what seems to be a very genuine attempt a good CD with a true recognition of variety and four or five different types of music. Make a mental note to yourselves now however, it's not the performed tune you wanna check out, no, it's this gem of a collaboration between Chase & Status and Dizzee Wascal.

House Of Grime - The Mixes 009: Moony !

Bonjour and all that Grime fans. The feedback I've received from the guest mix series so far (view them all here) went way beyond my initial expectations, with this brand new mix from DJ/Producer Moony we'll be nine volumes deep so for the 10th mix you can expect something big !

Mechanic by day, Producer/DJ by night - 22 year-old Moony is one of the more promising talents to emerge from the Internet forums. Based all the way down in Brighton, Moony started DJ'ing with Vinyl when he was only 12 years old and hasn't looked back since, producing many popular beats along the way.

House Of Grime - The Mixes 007: DJ Complex (OLD SCHOOL VINYL MADNESS)

My covers are piss poor.

Let me start with this little fun fact, DJ Complex a.k.a Bobby Ching has been involved in the music industry for over a decade now, starting out just before the turn of the Millennium with the Deep Clarity Camp. His DJ resume is OVER impressive, playing live with some of the greatest names to emerge from the British scene including the likes of Boy Better Know, The Heartless Crew, Tony Matterhorn and a whole plethora of other artists.

Being from Peckham, South East London, Complex was almost certain to somehow be involved with the rising "road rap" scene. This of course proved to be true when in 2002 he compiled a rap mix tape with his crew Slypeeps, which featured guys from top rap crews OTB and SN1.

Fast forward to 2010 and Complex is now in charge of Family Tree recordings, home to the young and dangerous South London crew featuring MC's such as M.I.K, Cani, TKO, Merky ACE and more, set to light up the Grime scene in the coming years. He's still playing out to crowds everywhere and was recently involved in the sick rave between Chockablock and GrimeForum. But I'm going all 'This Is Your Life' again, what you really need to know is that this mix is PACKED will old school Grime classics ranging from old Eski riddims to reminiscent Sticky productions. There are 40 odd tracks there, in one FAT mix for your own enjoyment, so ermm yeah, enjoy.

House Of Grime - The Mixes 006: Spooky Bizzle

After showing a clear interest in music from the young age of just 6 years old, in particular the art of DJing, Spooky has gained mass attention and respect within the underground music scene. Starting off via the pirate airwaves on DJ Ruff 'n' Tuff's Saturday Mystic FM slot, Spooky went on to DJ at some of the best and most popular stations known including legal outlet BBC 1xtra plus pirate's such as React FM, On Top FM and most notably Rinse FM.

It was also DJ Ruff 'n' Tuff that introduced Spooky to the wonder known as Fruityloops, which eventually led to him becoming one of the most notorious producers in not only the Grime scene, but the underground stable as a whole. In 2006 Spooky's status as one of the best around was pretty much concrete with the release of Slew Dem Crew's 'Joyride' vinyl. The tune, which featured many of the scene's top artists, became popular amongst many fans and DJ's and led to Jammer's 'MurkleMan' being knocked off of the 1xtra UKG charts.

Rossi B & Luca - E10 Riddim (Planet Mu)

Let me start by quickly assuring you of this: I do not like Funky. In my personal opinion the UK Funky scene is packed to the brim with desperate MC's and producers, trying their up most to emulate the golden era of UK Garage in the late 1990's, failing epicly along the way.

Now you know them really crappy Sunday's where you're sitting around doing practically fuck all as you wait for your roast dinner; which isn't going to live up to it's ever over-hyped taste, you may decide to whack on good old Rinse FM. In recent musical-times some of the shows regular DJ's have come under fire from the internet-fan-brigade for deciding to throw in a bit of Funky every now and then amongst their Grime expeditions, and don't get me wrong, I hate it too. There are good and decent funky tracks around and I appreciate variety...so what if there was a riddim or a particular song that would satisfy both the Grime and Funky parties. Alas..

South London duo Rossi B & Luca are DJ's and Producers, who's previous projects include Music Money, production for Jammer, Neckle Camp and remixes for Syer Barz & I.M.P Batch plus features on many compilation CD's.

There latest offering arrives on sick label Planet Mu, the pair manage to trace the funkiest of sounds over the grimiest of riddims, with rapid drum patterns accompanied by some sharp electronic sounds such as the infectious sirens that thrust through your headphones nicely.

It is indeed probably due to such sounds that Killa P has decided to theme his B side around that idea with Police Ar Come Run. Killa goes in with his usual no-nonsense yardie flow, with the catchiest of hooks to go with it ! A far cry from Rossi B & Luca's more darker, intense beats but brilliant all the same.

Logan Sama teamed up with the guys down at Palladium to bring you the Still Keepin It Grimy mixtape featuring new material from OG's, Ghetto, Little Nasty and more download that here. On the airwaves the early weeks were dominated by the OG's on Rinse FM, DJ Big Beatz from OT put on some good shows as did Smallz and Scope. As the ever-enlarging-grime-lens focused more on pirate radio than ever with Logan Sama's Monday night show on Kiss FM being cut down to a fucking ridiculous one hour, each and every set became more and more disappointing. It's not fault of Logan himself, in fact on one Friday night kiss were generous enough to air a 2 hour grime special featuring 4 pre-recorded sets from OG's, Bloodline, OT/360 and Newham Generals. Elsewhere I'm sure the most talked about news was the on-going fisticuffs between P Money and Ghetts. After Ghetts ever so in-directly sent for P on Logan's last set of 2009, and the (now)infamous Shark Attack Remix the two have been firing shots at each other wonderfully. The four guest mixes we've put out have received some fucking great feedback so far, so sending big respect out to DJ's Total (mix), Fewie (mix), Shredexx (mix) and Chris T (mix). Oh, and MC Lakey too. We're almost a quarter-way through 2010 (summary and all that jazz coming soon) and the aim to put out a mix per month went better than ever expected, so I'm pleased to bring you another one, right now.

Progressive Intelligence, which is a pukka name to start with, are as they claim, "a group of musicians". They're exactly that and to be fair, they are bloody good at it, if you haven't already then download their free E.P "Think About It" here (out to Butterz). The crew consists of SJS (producer/DJ), Sandman (Mc/Producer), B Chino (Mc) and the two original founding members - DJ Creative and MC Sun OC.

Their musical spectrum is a bit like a stretch armstrong - it goes everywhere. They do Dubstep, Funky, Rap - but most importantly - they do Grime. The good stuff. Oh and by the way, for the narrow-minded crew out there who insist that Grime can't bulldoze down the barriers beyond the river Thames, this musical lot are from the sunny old Netherlands. SNK, it's good to hear from you, what's good ?

Easy bruv ! Yeah I've just been sorting out my new CD and juggling uni work at the same time (Laughs).

We're getting stuck into 2010 now, but just summarise what 2009 was like for you ? Anything that particularly stood-out for you ?

Well 2009 was good for me, I released an instrumental EP and a 14 track vocal mix-cd for free. I also hooked up with OG's and worked with them on quite a few tunes, which in turn got my name out more and gave me more recognition in the scene. So yeah it was a good year. Also Slaughter released his mix-cd "365" which was done at my studio and were mostly my beats, same with Kozzie's "Straight Off The Book", and many others. So yeah was a productive year.

So back with this year then, your CD "Midi Master EP" is out soon, what sort of formats will that be available in ? Is it an all instrumental affair or will there be vocals too ?

Yeah Midi Master EP is a 10 track instrumental CD which will be out on the 9th of March. It's my first proper release and I done it all independently so I took things as they came and learnt a lot along the way. It will be in UK RecordShop and I'm yet to ring up the other record stores but it will be in all the usual ones. I'm also going to sell it on my bigcartel store. Digitally it will be available from iTunes, Amazon, emusic and a couple of others. Just google it !

I think the track that really boosted your profile was the OG's vocal of "Writers Block", "Passin Thru", would you agree ?

Yeah definitely. A lot of people will only take notice of you once you've worked with a known artist, so that definitely put my name out their.

You also had beats on a few solo mix tapes including Little Dee's and P Money's, who else can we expect to hear on your beats soon ?

Well I have beats already taken for P's next CD and I will be on Blacks' next CD's. I should also be on Wariko's next one and Desperado's. I'm a bit lazy when it comes to hollerin' at artists you know, but this year I'm putting together a vocal CD so there will be a nice list of artists on the track list !

Effectively you would say that 2009 has been your best year musically then, but how long have you been producing ?

Best year for exposure, collab's and work rate but I wouldn't say it's necessarily my best year musically. It's the year I got a lot more recognition though and I would say near the end of the year I developed my own "sound" more...errm..I think I've been producing for about 4 years now..

You mentioned your new CD was released independently, to what level of difficulty was this, what was the process like ?

A lot of phone calls and going to the record shops yourself, but it's not that difficult at all. I'll be getting a distributor for my next CD though !

When did you realize that you could actually produce, that it was something worth pursuing ?

Well I started out on fruity loops when I was about 16. My mates used to mess about on it but I only took notice of it when I was home bored one day. I installed it and made my first two beats and I was hooked from there. It was hard at first turning an 8 bar loop into a proper beat as I didn't understand structures and transitions etc. I never had any one I could learn from back then as I didn't know any producers so I had to learn from listening to current beats and clocking the different structures my self.

You started off on FruityLoops, do you still use that now ? What sort of other plug-ins and technology are you familiar with ?

I haven't used fruity loops for YEARS. I used fruity for like a year then I went on to Cubase and used that for over a year, then finally switched to logic when I got a mac, so I've been using logic ever since. Yeah I have a bag of different plug ins, but I'm going to get some more soon. I also have an MPC1000 and I had an MPC 2000XL which someone lent me, I use them for Rap/Hip Hop beats mostly.

How would you describe your sound ? What makes SNK different from the rest of the producers out there ?

I would say my sound is a mash up of Grime/Dubstep/Ambient/Electronic/Metal. I play electric and classical guitar and I've started incorporating it with my beats, so a lot of my new beats have electric guitar somewhere in them. Even the beats on my EP, the ones people have heard before, I've added like bridges and alternate "16's" using the guitar exclusively for the CD. So you need to cop that ! (Laughing). I'm not gonna say my sound is unique as everyone is influenced by something, but I'm just influenced by different things so my sound comes out a bit different to most. I rarely listen to other producers so i think that gives me a fresh look on things as well.

What sort of different things ? The environment around you ? Do you try and make a beat to fit around a particular MC's style ?

I listen to a lot of different genres, the past two days I've been listening to a lot of Nas, Nat King Cole, Nujabes and The Platters. (Laughs)A bit of a mix but I go through different phases of music all the time. Also when I make music the beat reflects my mood, I cant make a hype beat if I'm down but if I'm pissed off i will make a some evil sounding beats.

Yeah, sometimes I'll make a beat with an artist in mind, but most of the time I'll just make what I want and what feels right at the time, otherwise the beat will sound too forced...

You've worked with quite a few MC's now, so which MC would you love to see on a beat of yours ?

Yeah having a studio means I work with a lot of people, but having someone like D Double E on a beat would be a touch, I reckon he would suit my beats as well.

What's on the new CD that we're familiar with already (excluding Writers Block of course) ?

There's the instrumentals to the tunes "P Money - Nah Breddah" which is called Forty Thieves, and "Blacks & P Money - Not A Boy" which is called "It's Me". The OG's 8 bar tune was on my beat "Wavy" and the same beat was used for my 8 bar tune "Wavy 8's". Also people may also have heard the instrumentals on freestyle videos such as the "Young N Hungry TV" vids filmed by D-Boi.

As you said you dabble in all sorts of Genre's. Is it refreshing then, to see so many new people embracing combinations of music, for example the Grime/Dubstep hybrids ?

To be honest I didn't know people have only started to embrace the mixture of the two, I just think more people do it now. But where Dubstep has similar attributes to Grime it probably isn't always a conscious decision for producers, it isn't for me. Also lots of people like the old school grime beats, but times change with any Genre, and I feel the overall Grime sound is maturing and sounding more professional.

Another hot debate, more between producers and DJ's, is the current situation with Vinyl's Vs CD's Vs Digital downloads. Which works better, from your point of view ?

Digital will take over soon I reckon. It's so easy to release stuff on and the cost is minimal compared to getting CD's and Vinyl's pressed up. Also for the digital music buyers, they don't need to pay postage costs and they receive the music straight away so there's a lot of up sides to it.

Vinyl is dying because CDJ's and mixing on a laptop is so much easier as you can just burn off a CD or turn your laptop on and your good to go with any tune you want, but I really want to put something out on vinyl so I might work on something this year before it's too late. CD's should still last a while, a lot of people prefer having a physical copy than a mp3 file anyway. But yeah I think CD's and digital work better these days but I wish I was around when vinyl was at its prime.

So what's next for SNK after this CD ? A CD of artists vocals ? Or something else..

Yh spot on, I'm working on a vocal CD next, which will be available sometime this year, I'm aiming the release date at around Halloween, but I can't say for sure yet. Ill also be working on a digital release for the Rap heads as well, and of course a couple of free downloads here and there.

The Preview: Maxsta's 'Maxtape'

Let us all be truthful here, whether it be positive or negative everyone has had something to say about East London's Maxsta. He's steadily floated in and around the scene for about two years now, with features on CD's from Terror Danjah, Dot Rotten, Target/Danny Weed, Mega Mos Wanted, Frisco and more but now the 17 year old is ready to drop a project of his own - The Maxtape. Formally musical pals with Mucky Wolfpack and blessed with the chance to record at such studios such as Alwayz Recordingz and Digital Holdings, you would expect this CD to be something special - and that it is.

"It's different because I disregarded all the rules and created my own, it's different because every tune is a little piece of me whether an experience or thought and no MC goes through or thinks the exact same things. It's a maxsta." This is what makes the Maxtape different form everything else out at the moment, Maxsta explained. Asked if the material on the CD would sound similar to stuff he's made before, he replied "Na, with the Maxtape the vision was never really about what I can do, it was about what I could do, what I'd been holding back, on the whole it's a much more creative Maxsta experience than what your used to!"

The CD starts with a quick freestyle over Roll Deep's classic Heat Up and is followed swiftly by the familiar sound of his Eastern Thames ode East London Is Back. The productions are dominated by Roll Deep's Target, with other electronic craft from Swindle on I Don't Care & Back To Grime, the dirtiest of Grime from Maniac and Bless Beats on Next Ting & Bait Face respectively. My favourite riddim is no doubted Flava D's absolute vibesers on Talent which features vocal support from the man himself; Wiley. More contribution is lent via Dot Rotten, Flow Dan and the beautiful voice of Kerry Louise.

"I would like to follow it up with some singles, videos and another CD. I am much more concerned about getting another CD done 'cause I can't wait to take it to the next step.." That's what you can expect next from Max, for now just know that The Maxtape contains a mash-up of confident flows, wise words and excellent production...a worthwhile buy.

On the 24th of April last year, the entire Grime scene past and present were of great shock to learn one of the finest MC's about, Gavin "Esco Big Barz" Defoe, had sadly passed away.

It was terrible news for other MC's and fans alike and whilst it was well known that Esco had taken a step back from the Grime scene momentarily, it was heartening to find out he had a CD recorded a while before such devastating events occurred.

"Bars To Bricks" is the projects name, and below is the official video for one of the tracks taken from that project entitled "I'm A General" featuring the ever-present Newham Generals, D Double E and Footsie.

It's fair to say the D Double part has caused my neighbours a fair amount of stress today, yet alone the bass on S.K.I.T.Z Beatz DIRTY production ! The video is directed by Rsky (Risky Roadz) make sure you have a look at his website here.

Microphone Champion didn’t really live up to the so-promised hype, and whilst group efforts Too Many Man and We’re Goin In’ were enjoyable iPod fillers, as singles they had very limited success. But, that was last year, with the turn of the decade Skepta is back, and looking more promising than ever."

During their 5 year span Hyperdub have seemed more focused on releasing the dirtiest, scum-of-the-earth-bass type records about (note: Burial - Distant Lights EP) but with their recent rostering of Grime veteran Terror Danjah, they give an almighty nod to something a little more Grimier.

Acid is a fitting description for something so poisonous; the rapid opening (followed of course by the legendary Gremlin sample) is brought swiftly to an end by short burts of criminal bass that are bridged momentarily, with high synths first and then later on by original funky-like drum patterns disguising an orchestra of Grime instrumentation. Basically - disgusting.

In parts the rhythm borrows slightly, or even just casually flirts with the idea of The Prodigy's Charly:

An added bonus arrives in the form of D.O.K, who lends a hand on ProPlus. The toyful like opening is followed by a steady, yet head-boppable beat line that carries on smooth throughout, with a sound that unfortunately sounds a little to similar to previous Terror releases, hopefully the guys over at Butterz can sort out a re-release for Butterz 001: Terror Danjah - Bipolar ironically featuring D.O.K once more on the remix of Terror's infectious Sidechain.

Sadly ProPlus is a little bit of a time-waste, much like a chemical product of the same name. Terror has probably made a lot more riddims better than that. However, not to completely rain on Hyperdub's (grime) parade, grab the digital release and cop Acid, you'll f'in love it !

Devlin + Island Records = Good For Grime

I love Grime, I think that's pretty obvious. I'm not the only one though, because the rate at which Island Records are going, they're won't be many unsigned Grime artists left !

They've signed Wiley and Tinchy Stryder...and now Devlin is the latest act on the popular label which, since the late 1950's has rostered acts such as Eric B & Rakim, Bob Marley, Mika, The Sugababes and many more.

The news comes as a big boost to all parties involved, none least than the young MC's crew, Outakers. With their status as one of Grime's earliest formed collectives, it's smiles all round. "It's a big deal for the whole camp" said the crews manager, Mikee. Devlin being signed will bring the profile of the crew up a few levels !"

Perhaps Island's most notorious movement of late is taking one of Grime's finest young artists in Tinchy Stryder - and transforming him from an MC who once tore down raves such as Eskimo Dance and Sidewinder to a number one selling artist. Devlin's been a part of the scene for a while now, ever since 2006's Tales From The Crypt featuring classics such as Take Me Away, Reality Is Sinister and the original to the track below; Community Outcast..

Of course it's only fair that the long-adoring grime fan would be worried about Devlin's next step musically, but to be fair, Stryder still maintains contact with the Grime scene despite his ever-soaring status. OT's manager spoke with me about this "He wont be neglecting the scene. He knows where he comes from. He'll still be making the same kind of music. I don't think many can see Devlin dancing about with a big gold chain talking love (Laughs)"

It seems that Island is the best label for taking the young talent and making them big, and O.T had mentioned on there site that there was a lot of competition from other major's, so why was Island the choice ?

"For me it was the fact that Island seemed to understand Devlin better than the others and we agreed on the direction he should go in." Mikee told me yesterday. With that taken into consideration, the move can only be described as marvellous, best wishes to Devlin and his on-going journey..

North London MC Styler has been doing a lot since he first emerged a few years back, now onto his 3rd commercial release, I caught up with him quickly to discuss future projects, G-Fam and more...

Right first things first, The Off 2 Work E.P is out NOW, what can we expect on there ?

You can expect me stepping out the box a bit, I definitely stuck to what people know me for (Grime) but you've got hip-hop and a lot of experimental sounds on there. Each tune brings you a different vibe, there's something for the ladies, mandem, your Uncle, Aunt (Laughs). I've got a big dance track on there produced by Rowntree which is sure to get the ravers on there feet entitled "Dancing Shoes" authentic Grime you can dance too; the track's cocky, witty and the use of words are crazy (Laughs).

Are these the sort of tracks you enjoy making then or are you a fan of something a bit more dark/intense ?

I'm a fan of both, if I like the beat I'm willing to work with it, there's a mixture on the EP 'Dancing Shoes' is more Skippy/bouncy, then 'Wanna Take Us Down' which is produced by Dexplicit, it's more dark side with the intense bass line.

Would you say the new EP is your best piece of work to date then ?

You can always better yourself but in my personal view I'd say yeah. I experimented a bit and even shocked myself (Laughs) I played my friends away from music the EP and the feedback's been real good, they've been listening to me for a while and they hear the levels have been risen, one of my boys is even gonna play one of my tracks at his wedding, his misses loves the tune ! (Laughs). So appealing to other crowds are good the feedback is much so different but I've got the mixture I love grime and always will.

Last year saw you release "Stuck Between 2 Worlds", how did that do ? What was the reception for that Cd like ?

Yeah it got real good feedback and it's selling well even 'till this day, In 2008 I kind of took a break, only released a promo as my father passed away, it kinda knocked me you know, but life goes on and I know he would want me to pursue my dreams and achieve my goals. (Stuck Between 2 Worlds) was how I was feeling at the time, I'm not a teen or a youngen, I live by myself I'm a man and bills have to get paid so working in music I felt kinda stuck that's how that concept came around. The reception was good and motivated me, you never know how much people support you, but with this release I got alot of people hollering, even bringing Stylers Got Style Vol.1 I'm glad my musics getting out there.

You mentioned on your Myspace blog that "you've grown as an artist" in what way do you think the listeners can hear this on the new release ?

Know ones heard me on rap or anything apart from grime, but on my EP I take it that step further jumping on different genres of music, it's still me of course, just coming with a different approach to the music, I want my music to relate to all ages, races etc.

Looking at the new release and the previous ones, it seems you prefer to use the more up and coming producers as opposed to some of the bigger ones, how comes ?

I don't care if you're well known or up and coming, if you respect your craft and you make good music we can work holla at me (Laughs), every one deserves a chance.

What's happening with G-Fam ? Are there plans for a group release soon ?

G-FAM is still here, currently Dimples is incarcerated and will be out march. Last Laugh Vol.3 will be out April / May times, it's half complete, Random Impulse is working on his demo, he's got 300 freestyles due to release free ! I'm Not gassing, really 300 and his joint promo with Dot Rotten. Sicx is releasing his 30 track promo/free download at the end of February, we're always in studio, we're having a lot of meetings just getting everything organised and yes we are releasing a G-FAM mixtape which will be out this year, a couple of tracks are finished and sounding crazy ! We got a hood video filmed just before Dimps went inside entitled "Fire Man" check it out on YouTube expect alot from us this year.

How did you guys all first get together, did you feel that the Dimples setback was going to hinder you ?

WE grew up with each and music was always the way from early, I mean when Dimps used to DJ (Laughs), Dimples was on heat when it started with Method, Ganja Family been round for years, I always used to write and spit bars when I was younger, me and Sicx used to practice a lot together, then Dimps formed Rattle Pack which consisted of Random Impulse, Supes, Justice, Method and DJ R.S.T. I used to go on with them and Dirty Firm an alliance of North and South MC's, then one day we were just like yeah this is the fam lets make this happen and it took off from there.

You're heavily involved in one of Grime's biggest Podcasts "Grimes Not Dead Its Live", what was the notion behind it and what's happening with it at the moment ?

It's crazy because G-FAM / Y3MEDIA started Grimes Not Dead and a lot of people don't know that. Yellow, myself and Sicx come with the idea messing 'bout with the HD cam, I rang who I know in the scene, jumped in my bate Fiesta and started filming (Laughs). There was alotNappa with me I done a lot of the filming alongside Y3 he showed me about editing, y3 is a master when it comes to editing, I've seen a lot of people using his ideas and mine (Laughs) it's all good though, I'm glad it made such an impact, a lot of work went into it and it's branched out, now you've got SBTV, GrimeDaily, Cameraman Sketch; It's all good just remember were it originated from. Anyone who thinks any different you're stupid (Laughs), y3 just got the new cam so we want to start filming as soon as possible, so Grime's not dead it's alive !!!

Filming must've been an enjoyable experience, what was your favourite moment and who can we expect to see in the new series ?

Definitely the Napa footage, everyone was vibesing and filming drunk was fun, I even filmed Skepta in the ladies toilets spraying bars (LAUGHS) can't even remember why we was in there ! I filmed Target, Flow Dan on Nisi Beach, Riko outside Club Abyss, Flirta D in Napa Square and J.Money from Gully Gang. I was around on the cam g believe (Laughs) it was a fun experience, having long talks with y3 on the angle were gonna come at because we still wanna stay original and bring something new since (grimes not dead) a lot of other people have come through, we started it so we have to come out the ordinary, I'll definitely update you.

You've worked with the likes of Frisco, Chipmunk, Black The Ripper and more, who else would you like to collaborate with in the future ?

I'd like to work with Dot Rotten he's younger than me but I relate to a lot of what he says there's a lot of the younger generation I can't really relate too basically. They're good for nothing, spitting with no meaning that's dead ! Me and Shizzle are gonna be working together very soon and I'd like to work with Skepta, J2 k and more in the future I think they're good.

If you don't mind me saying, your work seems very North London orientated, how do you think North London compares to other areas in the Grime scene ? I get the feeling it's sometimes over-looked...

(Laughing) It's not biased or anything like that, my previous collabs are people I know and grew with in this musical journey so to speak, North london brought that content to the Grime scene I can put my hand on heart and say Heat FM sets were not full of one liners Frankie, North London definitely have their own swagger and a different approach to music. I can't name one person who sounds like another in North, not dissing but back in the day I was confused sometimes listening to De Ja like who's that ??????? Is it __ or is it __, it's changed a lot since then though people are more distinctive, if you're good I don't care where you're from we can work for real.

You've appeared on many a radio station, can we expect to hear you on the airwaves again soon ?

Definitely you're gonna hear me a lot, lining up a lot of shows gonna take it back to the essence and showcase I got a bag of new style and bars for them (Laughs) so it's only right.

Last but not least, what's next for Styler then ? You've had mixtapes..EP's..is an album on the cards ?

Of course, I'm working on it right now and I'm gonna drop a free download promo in a couple of months with some freestyles on some hot beats with some mad bars. Got 6 done already, got my first official video on screen soon, the singles on my EP 'Wanna Take Us Down' produced by Dexplicit this is gonna be one to look out for ! I've got the scripts and over-view of the video it's like a movie, the concept around it is crazy big up Trailpictures. Gonna get the Grimes Not Dead footage together and new footage and release a DVD so keep your eyes and ears open, don't sleep on me you'll get a rude awakening (Laughs).

Anything more you wish to say ? Who would you like to big up ?

So Lakey, for those not quite sure as to who you are, introduce yourself..

I'm Lakey, I produce music - mostly grime, I hold the best Grime raves in London- BACK OF THE Q!, and as an MC I've got tunes coming with Mighty Moe, P-money and Desperado.

How long have you been an MC, and how far do you plan to go with it ?

Since around 14\15, I only really got good last year though. I don't really want to do anything else apart from make money from music. Whether it be from the raves, tunes, shows whatever. I'm determined to make a wage some how though, and I wont stop until I've figured out how!

On this set there is a mixture of Grime and Dubstep, which do you prefer to spit on and why ?

Well thats a tough question. I think old grime wins hands down, but present day grime vs dubstep I'd pick dubstep. Thats just to do bars on though, not necessarily what I prefer to listen to.

You're also a sucessful club events organiser behind nights such as Back Of The Q, what/when/where is the next big event ?

The next night is our VALENTINES MASSACRE on the 12th FEB @ Corsica Studios. We have Artful Dodger vs Heartless Crew and Oxide and Neutrino in the Garage room and Silencer, Pmoney, Blacks and Elijah and Skilliam in the Grime room. House Of Grime Mixes 002: DJ Fewie

Here it is, the second guest mix installment ! I've been more than happy with the response from the 1st one, with plenty more downloads than initially expected. So since then I've been organising lots with many DJ's - some up and coming, and some well established. I've listened to DJ Fewie's show on Urban FMTV a few times and with an impressed feeling I hooked up a mix. Download it after the Q&A.

DJ Fewie..introduce yourself to us, how long have you been DJ'ing for and how did you get started ?

I'm a 22 year old up and coming DJ from Luton. I've been mixing for about a year and a half now. I got into it because it's something I've always wanted to do and I was always listening to DJ mixes rather than the vocal side of grime so when my bros got some technics he gave me his Numarks so I could start mixing myself and make my own mixes.

You've got a Saturday night slot on Urban FMTV how did that come about ?

I emailed Raw on myspace asking if I could get a show on there. He listened to my mixes off myspace, liked what he heard and offered me a slot.

Tell us about the tracks you chose for this mix, why do you like them and why did you use these in particular ?

I chose these beats to put in the mix as most of them are bubbly and skippy beats which I prefer mixing with and get me more on a hype when mixing. Big up all the producers making them type of beats. I put the Rukus & Acid tune in there also as they're mcs from Luton I rate and want to promote them. Im hopefully gonna get more mcs from Luton back on spitting so listen out for them sets.

How far can you see yourself progressing as a DJ ?

I would like to see myself going to the top and be a well known DJ in grime. I've still got to get my mixing perfected but one day I hope to be up there with the best !

What equipment did you use for this mix ?

I use Pioneer CDJ 400's, Behringer djx700 mixer and record with audacity.

Finally what can we expect from you in the near future ?

Getting my name out more. Doing more sets with mc's. Im also on Roundhouse Radio with Score5 & Meshak Nasty so lock in every saturday to hear some mad mixing from all djs. Desperado - A.B.M - Review/Download

Unless you're a relatively new listener or someone who just floats within the borders of Grime, you should, by now, be aware of Desperado. Spitting since the early days of 2003, the former South Soldiers front-man has had 3 CD's out to date (Barz 4 Dayz, Gryhme Bangers & The Regiment (w/ South Soldiers), and features heavily with South London's new leading collective - Organised Grime. Respected highly for his features on TV outlets MTV Base and his wide range of features such as Roadside G's, Skepta, Fumin, Wiley and many more, the South Londoner is making impact. We've heard plans for single releases plus rumours of a CD with Skepta and Roachee, but for now we're to enjoy this fresh new free download.

Opening energetically with the ever-welcome Roll Girl Remix, the mood is switched right around on the deep and synth-full Journey featuring the increasingly lovely voice of Cadice. South London Press shows a strong sense of writing skill from Despa, and for those hoping for something quite road and greezy Times Are Hard & Me On My Own do well. His efforts on Maniac's Ina The Ghetto beat are good and credit is due to Page, who featured on that one.

Here on my blog, I like to maintain the targets I set myself. So at the end of 2009, I said that I was going to release a new mix from a different DJ every month for absolutely no charge. Yeah, out the window that went. Instead I'm doing them as and when I can get mixes. So that will mean more than one a month. These, alongside my monthly "The Radio Grimes" downloads I hope will push the best of fresh, new up and coming talent, plus showcase the best of what we have already !

So I got on my Twitter, and had a word with top new talent, DJ Total. We spoke and right here, you can download an EXCLUSIVE brand new mix from the man himself. After you've read the brief Q & A I got with him.

So...DJ Total, for those who don't know who you are, introduce yourself...

I'm an 18 year old up and coming grime DJ from West London!

To what level of seriousness do you take your DJ'ing ? i.e is it just a bit fun or is this a career prospect for you ?

It's more of a hobby than anything right now, but one day I hope to be able to vacate it alongside whatever I'm doing in life as I really enjoy it.

Tell us about the tracks you chose for this mix, why do you like them and why did you use these in particular ?

The tracks I chose for the mix are just a brief insight into what I'm feeling at the moment, I just wanted to keep the mix energetic really! With the amount of good music sent to me selecting the tunes for this mix was pretty hard.

There is a big emphasis on DJ's at the moment, why and how did you get involved ?

My interest for DJ'ing came from going down to my youth club as a kid just messing about on the decks really, from there I nagged my Dad into buying me Technics for my 12th birthday, I collected vinyl here and there but I was never too serious about it. It's only the last year or so where I've took my DJ'ing outside my bedroom to be honest, and with the shortage of grime DJ's we have I saw it as a good opportunity to get into something I love.

What DJ technology do you use ?

Right now I own a pair of Pioneer CDJ-1000's along with a Hercules RMX DJ Console (MP3 decks) but of recent I've started to miss my Technics so when I got the money I will be re-purchasing!

And finally what can we expect form you in the near future ?

South East London MC Kozzie is fast making a name himself. Appearing on some of the best pirate radio sets of last year, as well as appearing alongside Blacks, P Money and Roxanne on DJ Cameo's 1xtra show, the 19 year-old is gaining interest from more people every day..

Right, I spoke to you twice last year, once about your solo project and then we spoke about clashing. Would you say anything major has changed since then ?

Yeah man, I left my old crew in December last year, Ardest Barrers. This year I've got a new promo coming out called Blue State Of Mind..

Ok we'll discuss the crew issues later on, first, your new promo. Will we hear material similar to the stuff on your mixtape ? Or can we expect something completely different ?

You will hear straight Grime like my mixtape, but it will be fresh and a harder CD really I'm back with a BANG trust me !

Good stuff, any clues as to what producers and maybe MC's may feature ?

(Laughs) Na no info on that, just be sure to hear the most un-expected and the best MC's, in my book, although there won't be many features I'm just focusing on myself that's why I felt the need to leave Ardest Barrerz.

Was that the sole reason for leaving the group ? And was it on good terms i.e will you still make music with them in the future ?

Ermm I will always do music with Slaughter and Mischief but as a crew the work rate wasn't good and I felt like I was doing it all but another reason I wanted to leave is just to focus on myself.

Fair play. With a lot of concentration on yourself now, have you planned out your year ? What's your overall aim for 2010 ?

Well I'm gonna drop my promo on the 30th of January. Then I'm gonna drop a new mixtape later in the year. I wanna have a few videos out and collaborate with new artists. I wanna be that guy in the game that everyone wants to be like...ya feel me ?

Yeah I hear what you're saying, anyone your're specificly aiming to work with ?

Well I'm thinking Little Nasty, Wiley, Skepta..all the top boys really.

Rumours are circulating that you're now a part of OG's. Is this true ?

I'll always be a part of OG's but if your talking about being in the crew, then no, I'm not. They're my family though.

Ok. So last year you was on radio quite a bit, will that continue in the run-up to your promo ?

Ermmmm possibly but I ain't sure. Radio ain't my target for this year, this year is about making tunes and making money out of the CD's, but yeah the bigggest sets expect me there !

So then, with Grime's only legal airplay now at a measly 1 hour a week, what do you think MC's (including yourself) can do to help push the sound ?

Keep doing exatcly what we have been doing, keep doing our sound and don't change it for no one. But I am pissed about that still, I guess we'll have to just get on with it still.

Will we be hearing any tunes from you that we would probably be a little surprised to hear ? i.e something for the top 40 ?

Yeah defo; the joke is I've got something for them still, be very aware. But I will not water down my grime, never.

Ok great, any idea when we'll get to hear it ?

Mixtape time so in the year sometimes, TRUST ME !

Are you confident about it ? Do you think it will actually pip other artists in their efforts ?

Whatever I do is the best, I think the tune will do well and maybe it won't get in the charts but it will gain radio play, believe me. I'm talking Kiss FM, Choice FM, etc...

Ok that's sounding positive. You gave out a tune recently, which contained sends for M.I.K, Merky ACE and more...what were the reasons behind the tune ?

(Laughing) Did I ? I just felt like it still, no reason.

Recently you've made some high profile appearances such as raves like Chockablock and ILoveLive, plus the set over at Kings Apparel. Do you feel that as an MC you're making progress ?

Yeah most definitely, I'm doing a bit still, I'm just trying to push my name out there in everyway I can ! So yeah I feel like I have made major progress.

Where else we will be able to see you this year ?

Most raves..the OG'z concert soon, big radio stations, Rinse FM..the usual really, the ones that make it count for my career 'cos I'm still only 19.

Well, where do you start with Dogzilla ? Front man of London's East-End music crew Outakers, Dogzy has been about for so long his name is pretty synonymous with the Grime scene and it's early movements, with Dogzy spending a short time with the Pay As You Go Cartel. Since his role on O.T's very 1st release (a 12" featuring Danny Weed), to his popular stints on Rinse FM and Roll Deep's Aim High Series, Dogzilla has been a constant talking point among listeners.

After a recent return to the scene he's been a part of for so long, his love/hate relationship with the listeners is set to chance with this: A Dog Is For Life, Not Just For Christmas.

An Interview With P Money !!!!

Since his younger days alongside Little Dee, Supah Jay, Firmer D and many more with the Block Kidz and Fatal Assassins, P Money's popularity has risen way beyond the walls of tower blocks in South London to the nationwide HMV's and indie kids. Whether it be Lake Days or Giddy Up, London Boy or 1UP, there's always a P Money tune being spoken about. After a successful year packed to the brim with Raves, Radio Appearances and his 2nd commercially available CD out now, it was only right to catch up with the rising star..

Money Over Everyone has been out for a fair while now, what's the response been like so far, what do you feel the CD has achieved ?

The response is sick, it has been and it still is. I get at least 5 to 6 people a day telling me they just got the CD and they love it, every event I have been to, even ones that aren't grime people have recognised me and shown me love about the CD, it's achieved a lot; Opened peoples eyes an ears an put me out there more.

It's a good CD. You're reguarly appearing on many people's lists/polls of top MC's, some top 10, some top 5 and even some top 3. In the days of Block Kids/Fatal Assasins did you ever see yourself getting this far ? How do those days differ from the present ?

I think everyone always saw them self becoming a top MC otherwise you wouldn't carry on with such passion. If you didn't feel it was possible then it wouldn't happen. I'm glad I'm there though, I don't spit to be the best I've got other reasons and stuff but obviously being classed as the best or one of the best is sick man I appreciate it a lot. I've come along way trust me some people won't know how long I have been spitting like this for, I can honestly say I have been good since young, some of the stuff people are doing now you can search on youtube and hear me doing that years ago so its nice to finally get recognition.

And of course now the official OG's concert is only a short while away..are you nervous at all ? After all it is a concert and not a rave, right ?

I'm never nervous, it's called a concert because we want to showcase our talent professionally, we can't call it a launch party cause our CD's are out now already. This will be big for the scene cause there will be others there supporting and performing and hopefully more shows from others will follow, these are the things this scene needs for it to grow trust me, but naa it's not a rave but the vibes we bring it feel like one just grab your drink an prepare to go sick when you hear your Og'z performing the tunes you normally go sick to in your room (Laughs).

Well you have been at strong amount of raves this year including Chockablock and I Love Live, where's been your favourite place to perfrom and what's been your favourite moment ?

There isn't a favourite place I like to perform in but I must big up the Goonies in Birmingham & Sukh Knight 'cause we tore it down. The vibes were consistent all the way through the set I loved it man the sing-a-longs were a lot (Laughs).

As well as the raves, you've been heavily involved in I'd say 2 out of the best 3 radio sets this year, how big a feeling is it when you know people have stayed up to listen to you or when you're tearing it up in a room full of top MC's (i.e The Massive Logan Sama set) ?

It's good to know all the people you used to hear on radio are now on your set and some of them are even your bredrins. The kiss set was a lot 'cause it showed how the scene can support each other, remember that was just to promote my CD and everyone came down. Skepta and Jammer brought alcohol an everything (Laughs). It's a good feeling to know people rate you highly around big time MC's, work pays off.

I see. So what is actually next for P Money ? You're 4 CD's/Promos down the line, what does 2010 hold for your listeners ?

I'm never one to say next year is mine blah blah blah I don't care about that crap, I just plan and do it. I'll have a CD with Little Dee, OG Season Volume 2, another bad boy mixtape, album, videos, hood videos, big collaborations, I don't even want to give in depth detail but my next mixtape isn't just a mixtape haha you'll have to guess what else it is but when it lands it will be worth it and I will have a sick launch party to go with it !

OG Season Volume 2 ! I think in 2009 OG's had to be the best collective of MC's, as did many other people, what can we expect from you guys in 2010 to keep that up ?

You've mainly heard Me, Blacks & Little Dee this year 'cause we were doing our solo stuff and that but now the whole team is back to work on OG Season 2, so you'll see an hear us everywhere, in fact it's already happening. R.I.P Nu Erra.

Yourself and OG's have always maintained that you are a collective and not a crew, essentially what is the difference and why do you prefer to be known like that ?

We're solo artists rolling together, crew is a crew that HAVE to do stuff together. We're sick individuals from the same area that think it makes more sense to carry on being ourselves but also linking up to move forward as a unit. If everyone reps but still does solo stuff and promotes the collective we're always rising.

I see, so Ogeezus landed on Christmas Day, who's idea was that and how did you decide who was going to be on each tune ?

It was my idea cause Ogeezus is a catchy phrase I made up for the raves and stuff and I thought why not make it free download editions. That was the Christmas edition and there will be many more every few months or so. We just say how many tracks we want and we just bring forward ideas with the beat and record. It's more of a CD to just finish the year we had our CD's out so we done a free one and put everyone else on the CD to show people a taste of what is to come. That was nothing for us to do so if people are going mad for that I can't imagine what will happen when OG Season lands (Laughs).

Do you have a rough idea for when you'll be putting the next release out ?

Probably March 'cause we have the concert which may be moved to February. Plus we have a lot to work on and I know a lot of people are releasing in the first couple of months.

Something I'm sure everyone wants to know about is the situation with Ghetto. You've had bars for each other on radio, on tunes and more recently you both appeared on the Shark Attack remix. Is there a clash in place ? How did the remix even come about, did you know of the line-up ?

Ghetts don't want to clash because he wants to go commercial. That's cool but what annoys me is he used to diss people for doing this commercial thing and he used to be on this "I'm Ghetto I make music for the road man". And now he wants to go commercial. I understand why and all that but you know, live up to your words, if you say no one can beat you then prove it. I had no idea he would be on the Shark attack tune, I was the first person to record my verse and send it over you can ask Sharkie Major yourself, so anyone getting confused can now see we wasn't in the same studio or nothing like that. It's a clash of ego's, he thinks he is the best and is unstoppable, I think I can stop him in a clash that's all. Sharkie was smart doing that though it brings hype for his CD an that but I was unaware. Ghetts knew I was on the tune but I heard he said he didn't want to hear my verse 'cause obviously I never heard his so I respect him for that but as for the people saying he had me on that tune, listen to what the man said and tell me where the diss is ? Saying you don't want to clash and why isn't a diss. Ghetts is sick very sick I just want to see just how sick he is myself.

With guys like Sharky Major on your list of collaborations who else would you like to work with ?

D Double E is all I want to work with right now, there are others I am working with but I will leave that for you to hear soon but D double is the only person I want to work with that I haven't spoken to about it.

Yeah D Double is wicked, excluding yourself which 3 MC's do you think are on top of the game at the moment ?

I don't really listen to MC's apart from Og'z or mandem so it would be a biased answer. I don't have a top 3 anyway that's rubbish. People are always going to pick the guys that have been around for ages even though they're not doing nothing. It's a joke, it's another reason the scene stands still cause everyone still rates the same people who you've probably seen or heard four times this year so I won't answer until I know what it's based on. D double is the sickest. I think Wiley has got even better this year still.

So with Wiley, Chipmunk, Stryder, Ghetts and the rest all trying to get a foot in the commerical door, will we ever see you going the same way ?

Yeah but I won't do pop or nothing like that. Dizzee didn't break through with pop so why can't I do what he did back then with Boy In Da Corner and bring my own Grime/Dubstep thing through ? Everyone is crying about it not going nowhere but people don't realise it won't go nowhere if you don't buy it init. Stop downloading and support the so called you music you love and then it will be commercial itself. Commercial is just music that sells. If you buy grime music then it's being sold alie? Dizzee was selling like crazy with his first album so he was commercial, the sooner people realise the buyers have the power to push their favourite artist the sooner we can go forward !

Ok so as an MC that's worked with a lot of producers and heard a lot of beats, from established guys like Wiley and Maniac, to up and comers such as Royal-T and SNK, what type of beat suits YOU as the MC ? What do you look for in a beat ?

My favourite is Dubstep, I love tunes with a sick drum pattern and bass to go with it. When I write lyrics I write to the drum pattern it's nuts you'd need to be there to understand. I think Silencer and Royal T's drum patterens are a lot, as for Dubstep, Sukh Knight is a madman !

Throughout your journey as an MC so far, there's been a mixture of hype and conceptual tunes, which do you prefer to write and why ?

I write what I feel at the time or what the beat brings to my mind. It's not really a thing of what I like to write more 'cause it's not a choice thing it's just about what's on your mind or what the beat makes you think or say.

Griminal has come out recently on a tune and claimed that you are not a better MC than Ghetto. He's also recently re-iterated that in a statement to his fans. How do really see things, do you think you're a batter MC than Ghetts ? And what do you make of Griminal himself getting involved ?

I don't care about being the better MC, Ghetts is supposed to be this super human MC who can't be beaten and I want to see if that's the real deal. Everyone has their opinion but you don't see me in interviews saying I am better than anyone or saying I'm the best so I ignore these comments. You tell me what makes someone the best? Or better ?

I guess it's the fans choice. If there's no chance of you two clashing, then dare I suggest the two of you working together ?

It would be sick but I don't want to, I have no problem with him and I think working with him would be sick but I like this kinda rivalry thing, it keeps me occupied and entertains others. The scene needs a little bit of good old fashioned rivalry, everyone getting along is good but why not get along and still have a few clashes or rallys an stuff; give the fans something to judge and go nuts over.

On that note, it's been good talking to you bro, anything you wanna put out there to the readers ? Any shouts ?

Doorly's Stolen The Show, But Get Will To Number 1 !

Wiley's back on his commercial grind after Wearing My Rolex hovered dangerously close to Number 1, and as much as I appreciated See Clear Now musically, it never really took off did it !? Race Against Time for me is 2009's best CD. It shows Wiley at his very best over a blend of disgusting production from Maniac, Bless Beats and Danny Weed among others.

People are still hanging on for The Illusive, but since the signing of contacts between Will and Island the grimey promise of the album seems lost. So we're left with this: Take That. I like the track, it's energetic, it's live, it's in your face. Chew Fu's productions suit the club scene well with the rapid patterns mixed with Wiley's emphatic vocals, the extended mix is a thing of beauty.

I sure do hope Wiley gets to the top of the charts like Dizzee and Tinchy before him, I prefer this effort to Wearing My Rolex, but it's Doorly's marvellous Dubstep shenanigans that impress me. The bass on Track 4 is just absolutely obscene. Disgusting. Dirty. Speaker-Raping. The 3 way-crew remix is disappointing, Scratchy impresses though. BUY NOW AND GET WILEY TO NUMBER ONE.

I was going to wait until I'd completely ran dry of Stella's and indeed actual pub-pool/darts money until I made this post. I'm 18 (this isn't an auto-biography bare with with me) now, I was born in 1991 and as much as I sometimes love joining them shitty nostalgic groups on Facebook confirming the fact I'm much of an "90's Kid" or a "90's Babie" (Who the fuck spells baby like that I don't know), I've actually grown up and lived the important years during the 1st Decade, of the 2nd Millenium.

The Noughties have seen some pretty fucked up stuff like Terrorism and all time-low Economic Meltdowns, but it's the musical side of things I'm interested in. We've seen the rise of many great UK acts - with some also came great falls. We've seen a WIDE variety including the sometimes great but then rather corny sounds of Craig David, Daniel Bedingfield, So Solid Crew, N Dubz, Mis-Teeq, The Artful Dodger and UNTOLD MORE.

A very promising yet somewhat confusing array of tracks. Unless I severely overdosed on a late Friday night dosage of Methadrone, I'm pretty sure Nokia Charger Wire was included as part of the tunes-that-should-of-been-on-my-album - so-have-them-for-free-on-my-birthday-instead 2 track package. His "link-up" with Rapper Juelz Santana isn't very good and I'm not all that keen on Blow My Own Trumpet. I will be buying this CD, but in the process of doing so I won't be able to hide my slightly dissapointed and rather bumped-off look. If the CD was a compilation of tracks we've heard but not been able to hear for donkey's years I'd feel a lot better, but there are tunes on there that we haven't heard; the CD is exclusive to UK Record Shop which means no audio previews. I will not be disappointed Stupid nor Over The Top 2...and..There is light at the end of the tunnel. A lot of light. In fact I think I'm blinded (no Mike Skinner).

Best Producer of 200'n'9 - Silencer

Yeah, shitty title I know. Just wanted to keep it short and (slightly) sweet.

So in the previous post where I revealed my favourite track, plus my favourite instrumental release of the year, I drew the conclusion that neither Breakage nor Maniac were deserving of the crown for best producer. I opened up my copy of Virtual DJ just for a quick play around with some beats from loads and loads of producers. I went through almost every beat I had on my laptop, ranging from producers such as Rude Kid, Royal-T, SRC, J Beatz, Skepta, Shotz blah blah blah. Anyway to cut a long story short, my producer of the year has to go to Silencer. Yep. TEDDDYYYY. It's been a good year all round for the guy-whos-beats-make-you-say-WOW-BASS. It's grime through-your-sub-woofers at it's very best. He didn't have the best CD no, it's his contributions for everyone else's however, that makes him stand out more than other producers who've also worked hard this year. Let's take a brief look at a few credits -

P Money - If Man's Talking, Skepta - Gingerbread Man, Hammer - Silence Man, Lethal B - Don't Run Up, Blacks - WW4. Not forgetting the beats on his own CD, including DJ-battered selections such as Wizard, Goblin, Judgement Day and many more.

The only reason the CD didn't get my vote for best of the year is the little factor I like to call "samey". Because a lot of the best were. But to sign off Silencer as producer of the year:

Initially I was going to wait until the very, very end of the year to write this one. In fact this isn't even the one. Nominations for Grimeforum's 2009 awards have started (check them out here), and whilst all the users are busy posting who they think deserves to win what, I've pondered carefully on my own choices..

Best track of 2009...Breakage Featuring Newham Generals & David Roddigan - Hard.

I didn't even have to think extremely hard about this one. Breakage isn't even a grime producer primarily, listeners claim Dubstep to be his forte, but if his new found desire for beats at 140 continues on the yellow-brick-road it's travelling down at the moment then Grime's top producers have a new rival. The 'Gens are and will always remain grime scene royalty, everything they touch seemingly glistens, without much effort either. There's not much you can say about this tune without being over-emphatic; pressing drum patterns mixed with DEE and Foots' incredible verses combined with little mini-speeches from Dancehall boss David Roddigan make for epic listening. Catch a proper review here. Tunes that missed out slightly: Wiley - Where's My Brother, P Money - 1UP.

Best instrumental release of 2009...Maniac - New Age Grime

This however did prove to be a tricky decision. In 2009 producers have come into the limelight more than ever before with most releases containing relevant credits and instrumental CD's and EP's appearing regularly. The first initial release that came to mind was Nocturnal's CD offering Nocstrumentals. Followed swiftly by Silencer's Run The CD. But I dug deeper and went back to the CD I reviewed back in July, Maniac's New Age Grime. Whilst there is a wide range and much more popular selection of Maniac instrumentals about, N.A.G seemed to be a selection of the finest instrumentations 2009 had to offer, with orchestral activity on Ugly and heavy, pretty Dubstep like origins on Wobble & Ouch. Grime was showcased at it's purest on Headshot and the brilliance of this CD was summed up with my closing description:

"Like a PIMP, cock-slapping a virgin in her pretty little face".

Strangely, Newham Generals are not proprietor to what I herald as this years best CD, nor is Maniac actually who I think is the year's ultimate producer. You'll find out what I think about that tomorrow.... ;)

Breakage - Hard (Single - Digital Soundboy)

Breakage is a producer who of very recent times, could be held responsible for some of the best tunes about. On their previous EP Together/Rain, Rain is a laid back low-bass anthem, which appropriately goes down well when your doing coursework on a dimly lit computer desk, at 1 AM on a rainy Sunday. Together saw a link-up with legendary Dancehall/Reggae David Roddigan, but that was only the instrumental to what we've got on today's release, Hard.

Breakage has found form on his 140 BPM beats, the drum patterns on these are intense; sly snares at the start of this melody blend well into hard pulsing drum patterns, and immense synths intensify the song, particulary during the hook. It's reminiscent to something I heard on Tubby's show a while ago (I didn't catch any track details), D Double E and Footsie bring something of an old school vibe in their part of the bargain.

The release also comes with a remix from The Dub Police's Caspa, which strays none to far from the original with some typical Dubstep sounding bass thrown in. Plans for a Breakage album sound exciting - a definite must buy. For now, head over to Boomkat and grab this.

Lawless - Interview !

Lawless is an impressive young artist from the East End of London who some may recognise as the younger cousin to Grime veteran Kano. I caught up with him to talk about his year so far, the year ahead, Rinse Fm and much more...

Me: Right good to finally talk to you mate, how are things things at the moment ? Hows music going ?

Lawless: Yeah every thing's going good at the moment you know. It's coming up to the end of the year so I'm just taking a little well deserved break. Nice to be finally interviewed !

Me: Like you said it's the end of the year, how would you summarise the year for you as an artist ?

Lawless: Well this year I'd say would have to be my best so far. I'm going to have to highlight appearing on Rinse Fm as my biggest achievement of this semester.

Me: What was it like spitting there ? Did you some sense of recognition ?

Lawless: Ermmmm... In a way I did. You might have not been able to tell but there were a bit of nerves there still. Nothing worse than flopping on live radio. There's no delete button (Laughs).

Me: Understandably. So this year you've had I think.. two promo downloads out, take us through the vocal one, Heir To The Throne..

Lawless: Well Heir to the Throne was more of a statement promo. I felt that I was underrated and needed to be taken more seriously but half way through I decided to give up a little bit, as I'd improved. So now I look forward to starting the next project which will be Bars of Gold Vol.1.

Me: Sound interesting..and of course the brand new instrumental promo as well, what sounds can the listeners hear on there ?

Lawless: Well.. I've been producing for about 9 years. But what makes me different is I love to make Hype, Hype dubs I'd say. They're not really beats. They're stuff you would play in a clash just to add that little extra hype. The reason it's called Yardie Beats, by the way, is because most of the outstanding grime producers are from African origins. So I'm just showing that us Jamaicans have got talent on the buttons too (Laughs).

Me: Fair play. Why did you decide to take on both the roles of MC and Producer ?

Lawless: Well from young it just came naturally. I was also a DJ too, back when vinyl's were in. But I MC'd as a little joke when I was around 8 years old. I had relatives who were and still are in the music buisness so that influenced me in a way. But I don't look up to them, its more of a competition thing.

Me: And can you see yourself surpassing them ?

Lawless: Hopefully. I'm tryna surpass everybody, that is my main aim for 2010. Even though I'm an underdog, I love to surprise people and prove people wrong. I get a great feeling when I achieve something I'm told I won't be able to.

Me: Why are you the underdog ? What do you think borders yourself from the MC's at the top of the scene ?

Lawless: Fan base..A fanbase makes an artist what it is. The stronger your fan base is the more likely you are to succeed. And my aim in 2010 is to gain as big as a fan base as possible. Without the fans, there's no listeners or hype around your name.

Me: I see. Something I do want to discuss is two of your GSI TV freestyles. At the end of one of them you had a bit to say about Marvell MC Shocka, what brought this on ?

Lawless: Well... (Laughs). Basically I just got fed up really. Of all this unnecessary intervention. Shocka tried to play the bully, getting involved in something that had nothing to do with him. So I had to give him a taste of his own medicine. I've received mixed responses from my actions but that's what I expected. Most have been positive though.

Me: I see. Now the second video touches on what you mentioned earlier - Rinse FM. You went there with Dogzilla and Devlin, what was that like, spitting with two of the scenes most recognised and admired figures ?

Lawless: Yeah and what a great experience it was. Everybody thinks most MC's are stubborn and walk around like they're bosses and above everybody else. But they're wrong. Only Chipmunk does that (Laughs). Nah but on a serious note, they're very laid back characters and half the time you forget who they are yourselves because they treat you like someone they've known from school days.

Me: Great. So, two promo's for this year done, you spoke about Bars Of Gold Vol.1..what's next for you as an artist ?

Lawless: For me as an artist it's to get myself sorted out with my label. Umm to bring out a Yardie Beats Volume 2 mid-next year hopefully and start getting stuck into Bars of Gold Vol.1 which should be a good release assuming everything goes to plan with features.

Me: What features are you looking for ? Which MC's are doing a lot in your eyes at the moment ?

Lawless: Maxsta is definitely one of my favourites. I spoke to him yesterday and he should be hopping on after he finishes the Maxtape. Everybody go out and cop that by the way. That's real music. Ermm Rockz should be on there. For those of you who don't know about Rockz you need to get yourself on GSi Tv and find out. He's a definite feature. Clipson who you may remember formerly as Clipper from Fire Camp, I look up to him as a mentor, he's helped me get through a lot so he's another must. And you know what.. I want O.T on my release too you know. As I live around the area and that it would be a nice collaboration I think. And there should be a few more big surprise features on the Disc.

Me: And..maybe an instrumental CD ?

Lawless: Like I said, Yardie Beats Vol.2 probably mid this year coming. I don't think I have a right to start selling my beats yet. That would be cheeky. But my beats are welcome to anybody to vocal. If you want one specially made don't be araid to hit me up and talk to me, I'll see what I can do !

Me: Ok that's fair enough, is there anything else you wanna say ? Any shout outs ?

Lawless: Big up to everyone really. Big up House Of Grime and Frankstah. Big up Hij an the Grime Forum crew as they play a major part in the grime scene right about now. Big up GSi Tv for filming me. Starkey - OK Luv (Single - Planet Mu)

Planet Mu have been bringing out some fine releases since the late 90's, making sure to keep up with an ever-evolving electronic street sound, with Grime vibes from Terror Danjah on Industry Standard 4 and Gremlinz: The Instrumentals plus speaker-raping Dubstep from Brackles, Burnkane and many more.

They've been releasing American dub-stepper Starkey's music for a hot minute now, Gutter Music could be seen as the tune which put him on the map of Grime listeners during the first half of this year with his Durrty Goodz collaboration, and now after doing remixes for the likes of Kano he returns with new single "OK Luv".

This time around Starkey entails help from Midlands Mc/Vocalist Badness, who's recently had a CD out himself (PaLava Eruption, buy). The tune's low bass suits Badness' blend of rough yet compromisingly smooth vocals, and Side B (Track 2 for digital) instrumental Mutiltidal varies in pitch throughout, creating a wave-like journey throughout (them clever track names there). Ok Luv's instrumental form can also be found, sounding even more refreshing minus Badness' vocals, which were good mind.

I caught up with REC, one of Grime's promising young prospects to talk about his new EP and the like, for grimeforum.com.

It’s been a while since we’ve spoke, where have you been and what have you been up too ?
Rah, well I’ve been working on making the EP as good as possible, while appearing on Urban FM and UKFlow.TV and stuff just putting in the work behind the scenes really.

Before we start talking about the new EP, lets talk about Press Play. It came out earlier on in the year, what was the listeners reaction like ?

You know what, it was very positive. Most people told me it was a solid release and the good thing is most people didn’t feel that I was over-shadowed by any of the features on the collabs so that’s good, although I only made about 50 copies for sale to see the reaction it sold out twice in Uptown Records so yeah that’s positive !

Having your CD sell out once must feel good..let alone TWICE..?

Devlin The Giant

Devlin's had a pretty frantic second half to 2009, with the videos for "London City" and "Community Outcast" both appealing well to masses of fans, the white-boy-from-dagger is becoming somewhat of a household name. Well, my Mum and Dad know of him anyway.

I like the tune and the video, but only in certain places for each. The lyrics are astronomically clever as we've come to expect from OT's leading MC and the idea of having bits and bobs on the white wall impressed me. (Sidebar: I didn't pause the video to see what else I could read. Honest. Please believe me !?!). However the opening scenes where Devlin stands on the stage and takes his hood down only further adds gas to the "Devlin is the UK's answer to Eminem" fire. Let us have our own artists for fucks sake. Reminds me off that time Estelle compared Ghetts to Busta Rhymes. He is not Busta Rhymes from Florida, he's Ghetto from Plaistow. Now fuck off.

Oh yeah support and all of that, Bud, Sweat and Beers is due for release early 2010.

Trim - Monkey Features Review

Trim is back ! Monkey Features is Trim's second offering to listeners this year after Soulfood Volume 4 landed back in March, and his fifth solo effort since his very vocal parting with Roll Deep. Something that many fans felt amiss with his last offering was the complete lack of fresh, exciting productions combined with an array of worn out bars and a general lack of spark.

Despite the lack of brilliance however, Trim remains one of my top 10 MC's and I'm desperate to prove this CD has what it takes to be one of this year's best..because it does. The curtain is raised by the familiar sounds of Balistiq Beats on "Monkey Features" (Oh, productions will be something I highlight frequently throughout, in advance) and Trim doing what he does best..

"Four mixtapes No creepers No videos No t-shirts No promotion No shows No litres No commotion No help No ninas No shanks No sleepers and No I dont roll with them man either they gave me a platform safe see ya wouldnt wanna be ya"

I wonder, do you remember that singer fellow who done some tunes with Roll Deep ? Kivnac is his name, turns out he's a dab-hand at producing as well, he's magic hands are lent on "Battlefield". Not Trim's usual choice of beat I must say, I caught quite an indie sounding vibe from it (remember all that Grindie kerfuffle ?), but Trim handled it nicely. Also provding a smiliar sound is "Words" and one of my favourite tunes "Trim Again" features Trim matching a cathy hook with a sly grage sounding bassline !

Of course a CD isn't all about the productions, it's also and probably more importantly about how the artist handles them. Trimothy's lyrics have both humoured yet riddled me over the years and you can find nothing less than that on tracks like "1 Line Flow", "Trousers Remix" which features the ever amusing Riko and "Show On Road" which is just that song. If something dark and intense is what you're after, make sure to check out his joint-tune with Lee Brasco in which both MC's go deep.

To conclude, Trim has shown a mass amount of versatility, spitting over grimey beats fulled with hints of garage and indie bass. I do think it's his best CD to date, producers have provided great listening and the CD could certainly be played to a wider audience. I'm highly aniticipating the album which is set to land sometime next year, for now BUY THIS CD.

I had the pleasure of meeting the guy on more than one occasion, he will be missed sorely by many, my thoughts go out to those. Blacks - Sick Individual - Review

I enjoy listening to Blacks' music, there's something about it that seperates it from a lot of other MC's efforts. And sometimes, being an artist has a lot to do with characther as well as talent, Blacks seems to have both. I wasn't majorly impressed by 2008's mix tape The Blackout, although it did have a certain edge to it, much like this CD. The difference with this CD is however, it's better. Simple.

The proceedings are started with the familiar sounds of Silencer's World War 4 and Chase & Status' Eastern Jam. I like this idea of MC's spitting on bass-ier dubstep like beats, P Money displayed it's possibilities on his CD "Money Over Everyone" and it suits Blacks to a tee. It's fair to say both beats were ripped apart and before we have time to talk about it, we get deep on 'You Don't Know Me' where emotions are showcased with a great hook over Crayzee Banditt's deep rhythm. 'Fuckery' (what a name) could've maybe done with a stronger production, whereas '5, 4, 3, 2, 1' couldn't be further opposite.

If weak productions are what let The Blackout down for you, then you should feel a sense of excitement when listening to Nocturnal's hand on 'Timid', not to take anything from Blacks though, or indeed Jammer who smashes his verse ! 'How You Feel' is a deeper version of 'You Don't Know Me', with Rude Kid on buttons and a chorus I could listen to over and over.

I knew there would be Rap on this CD, I'm not to bothered to be honest but a bit more effort could've been made on 'Next Ting' a hip-hop-drum raped affair, but just as things start to dumb down 'Won't Have It' restores faith, well minus the auto-tune hook anyway. I'm sure you can draw your own conclusions from the title 'Number One Girl', this tune is a mere block in the path of my favourite tune: 'Superstar'. The tune enlists the help of Roll Deep's Manga, and the pair of them GO IN ! The CD's at it's best here, from now I'm going to outline a few other bits as 18 tracks is LONG to talk about.

'Where We Living' is a big OG's re-working of Kano & Mikey J's 'Hustler', and I much prefer this one, especially felt Little Dee's verse. 'Madnes' pretty much follows that title and 'Floating' closes well with a cameo from *parredbyjamelia* Maxwell D.

This Cd has been a pleasure to listen to. Come the end of the year when I write up my top ten CD's, I'm sure this will be there. It's Hype, Greeze, Dirt - all other Grimey metaphors. It's weird because usually I'm a fan off more advanced rhyming schemes, whilst Blacks uses some of the simplest of lyrics but to much more effect. A much needed CD to any collection.

Brand new tune taken from Doller & Z Dot's joint EP "Go Getterish". Tune is very catchy, feeling Delusion on the chorus, and Doller has shown a great improvement since H.E.A. Z Dot's stepping up in the prodcution game, the tune "Artillery" by Ghetts was produced by him, look out for more of his support on the Go Getterish EP and Ghetts forthcoming CD "Calm Before The Storm".

End Of The 00's.........

I had to blog something. I've got reviews coming shortly for CD's from Blacks, Scorcher, Flow Dan, Untitled plus more including interviews with former O.T producer Rachet, Roll Deep MC Brazen and promising up and comer REC. Until then however, I got thinking.

Thinking that not only are we approaching the end of the year, it's actually the end of a decade. The Noughties played Mum and Dad to the sucess of many UK artists, including the likes of Craig David, The Streets and So Solid Crew, but it's more the birth of Grime I'm interested in. No one knows exactly when it started, likewise with which particular tune but when it did emerge - who really knew what it was ?? The immediate reaction to the genre's electronic, updated-rap-sound was to connotate it with the already worn out and dying 2-step Garage sound, even since then producers have been accused of "biting" sounds from the likes of Bassline, Dubstep and even early 90's Jungle/Drum N Bass.

All of the aforementioned genres can be heard being played on one of the leading pirate radio stations about today - Rinse FM. 15 years of age only recently, the station has helped push Grime on the way to where it is now, with artists such as Dizzee Rascal, Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk and (nearly) Wiley topping national charts and having music spun on daytime Radio 1, as opposed to Rinse, Heat and Major FM being their desired target stations.

There is a point to this article, over the coming week or so, I'll be revealing the 10 CD's which I feel are the best Grime CD's to come from this decade of pure madness. Quick note: So yes, essentially the 10 best grime CD's of all time.

Tommorow I'll be revealing probably the most obvious choice CD, featuring a one superstar MC from Bow. What are your favourite CD's ?? Let me know - SAFE.

Wiley - Take That (Official Video)

Great video from Wiley, not his usual field, but a big tune all the same. I think I prefer "Wearing My Rolex" in all honestly, but, the drop at 2:50 on this song is MAD. This is out on the 28th December via Island Records (I'm strongly assuming it's with Island anyway), a bit awkward considering the fact you'll have some SHIT X-factor winner hogging the top spot with there money launderd battyboy noise, so a number one is a bit of a reach. All the same, SUPPORT Wiley when his single arrives in December and take time to check out his new website..

Ohhh and how rude, big up too Chew Fu !
